This article will address the documents required by the Israeli Ministry of Interior (<em>Misrad HaPanim<\/em>) in order to submit a request for <em>aliyah<\/em>\u00a0according to the 1950 Law of Return and successfully complete the process of making <em>aliyah<\/em> to Israel.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Law and Ministry of Interior Procedure<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The first article of the Law of Return states that &#8220;any Jew is eligible to make <em>aliyah<\/em> to Israel&#8221; and thus receive Israeli citizenship. The law, however, says nothing about how one will actually prove being Jewish or demonstrate their Jewish heritage. The Israeli Ministry of Interior procedure on making <em>aliyah<\/em> to Israel has a list of documents required in order to submit the <em>aliyah<\/em> application.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The documents required for the Israel <em>aliyah<\/em> procedure are both <strong>religious documents<\/strong>\u00a0that\u00a0verify that the applicant is Jewish or of Jewish origin, as well as <strong>civil documents<\/strong>\u00a0that prove who the applicant is.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><iframe title=\"How to make Aliyah to Israel\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kjDXtIKNsHs\" width=\"1586\" height=\"580\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Religious Documents<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Ministry of Interior procedure does not have a specific list of documents that a person making <em>aliyah<\/em> to Israel\u00a0will need to submit. Any document proving religious affiliation is acceptable, such as a Jewish marriage certificate (called <em>ketubah\u00a0<\/em>in Hebrew), <em>bar mitzvah<\/em> certificate, proof of burial of parents or grandparents in a Jewish cemetery, membership in a synagogue, membership in Jewish organizations, and any other document which can show a person, or any of their parents and grandparents, are Jewish. Also, the Ministry of Interior clerks will require a person making <em>aliyah<\/em> to Israel to submit <a href=\"https:\/\/script_transfer_new.mowfns.ap-southeast-2.wpstaqhosting.com\/en\/proof-of-judaism-recognized-rabbis-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a letter from a rabbi<\/a> or from another Jewish organization for endorsement of the <em>aliyah<\/em> request.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1154 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/script_transfer_new.mowfns.ap-southeast-2.wpstaqhosting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Shabbat-Aliyah-to-Israel-210x300.jpg\" alt=\"making aliyah to Israel\" width=\"104\" height=\"148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/script_transfer_new.mowfns.ap-southeast-2.wpstaqhosting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Shabbat-Aliyah-to-Israel-210x300.jpg 210w, https:\/\/script_transfer_new.mowfns.ap-southeast-2.wpstaqhosting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Shabbat-Aliyah-to-Israel-718x1024.jpg 718w, https:\/\/script_transfer_new.mowfns.ap-southeast-2.wpstaqhosting.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Shabbat-Aliyah-to-Israel.jpg 1626w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 104px) 100vw, 104px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Civil Documents <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding civil documents, a person making <em>aliyah<\/em> to Israel will\u00a0need to bring their\u00a0passport and birth certificate in order to prove who they are and how they are connected to their Jewish parents and grandparents, and if possible, also their parents&#8217; birth certificates.\u00a0A person who is married and has\u00a0children needs to bring the marriage certificate and birth certificates of their spouse and children.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other than that, another important document required of anyone who is making <em>aliyah<\/em> to Israel is a document called &#8220;no criminal record certificate.&#8221; This police clearance is acquired\u00a0from the police department\u00a0(the FBI for example) to show that the <em>aliyah<\/em> applicant and future Israeli citizen has\u00a0no criminal background and will not be a threat to the public in Israel.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Authentication of the Documents <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Note that these documents need to be the originals. If not, the documents need to be authenticated by an Apostille according to the 1961 Hague Convention. This authentication process is just like a Notary Public, but on an international level.
